The GED® is the most affordable option for homeschoolers to complete a Grade 12 Equivalent Qualification, making it possible for learners to study further after secondary school.
The GED qualification is achieved after writing the GED exams.
Passing the GED provides a learner with certification that the learner has the same academic skill as any United States or Canadian High School Graduate.

The GED® High School Equivalency Certificate is recognised as a Grade 12 Equivalent Qualification in South Africa. It is evaluated by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and deemed comparable to the National Senior Certificate (NSC) at NQF Level 4.
This opens up a wide range of post-secondary opportunities for learners—whether they aim to continue their studies, enter vocational training, or join the job market.
GED graduates are eligible to:
- Apply for further studies at private colleges, TVET institutions, and some international universities. (GED is accepted by 90% of colleges and universities in the U.S.)
- Pursue NQF Level 5 qualifications, such as Higher Certificates, at many accredited institutions in South Africa
- Progress to NQF Level 6 diplomas and NQF Level 7 degrees (subject to meeting institutional requirements)
- Enter the workforce with a recognised Grade 12 equivalent, demonstrating essential 21st-century skills such as critical thinking, problem solving, and digital literacy
