University Admission
The American High School Diploma is an internationally recognised qualification and is accepted in South Africa as a Matric Equivalent. A Matriculation Exemption is a pre-requisite to study at a University in South Africa.
According to Legislation, learners who do not complete the South African National Senior Certificate (Matric), have to apply for a Matriculation Exemption - a certificate obtainable from USAF (Unversities South Africa), that a learner meets the minimum requirements to apply to study at a University in South Africa.
Matriculation Exemption does not grant University admission, learners must meet University specific requirements such as APS points and/or subject requirements. Parents and learners must always check University requirements with the University they are applying to.
USAF who are the matriculation board in South Africa provided requirements for three options through which the American High School Diploma can be obtained for admission to a South African University.
Requirements listed in these three options:
- Option 1: Obtain Dipoma through institute accredited by USAF approved accreditation body
- Option 2: Obtain Diploma with atleast two subjects passed on AP (Advanced Placement) level with a Grade 3-5
- Option 3: Provide Diploma with SAT test results
SAT is a Scholastic Appitude Test that measures University readiness of a learner. There are no special requirements to take the SAT test. Tests are written at SAT examination centres, there are 9 SAT examination venues in South Africa.
Universities and their particular facalties have their own requirements for SAT test scores. Parents and learners are advised to check with their University of choice for SAT test score requirements and any other additional requirements.
AP - Advanced Placement courses give learners an introduction to what University level courses will be like. AP courses not only give learners Diploma credits, they help learners qualify for more advanced courses in University. AP courses are available in 38 subjects, there is no limit to the number of AP courses that can be taken. Universities require specific AP courses and require certain minimum AP scores.
