Credits and electives
In the American High School Diploma learners must accumulate a minimum of 22 credits from Grade 9 to Grade 12 to successfully graduate. This credit-based structure provides flexibility, choice, and the ability to personalise the learning journey based on each learner’s goals, interests, and pace.
Electives are courses that learners choose in addition to their core academic subjects. They offer a chance to:
- Explore personal interests or hobbies
- Develop creative, technical, or vocational skills
- Gain career readiness or university/college preparation
- Enrich academic transcripts for university applications
Learners need to complete six elective credits from Grades 9-12, core subjects can also be taken as electives. Learners are encouraged to select electives that align with their passions, post-school plans, and unique talents.
A credit represents the successful completion of a course that meets the expected academic workload and instructional time.
- 1 full credit = approximately 150 hours of study, or the completion of a standard year-long (2-semester) course
- ½ credit = approximately 75 hours of study, usually a single-semester course
Learners accumulate credits across various subject categories to meet graduation requirements.
