Senior Phase

During the Senior Phase, learners are provided with more opportunities to acquire, develop and apply a range of more advanced knowledge, understanding and skills. The curriculum at The Senior Phase is transitional, to inform choice and to enable independence on the part of the learner. The Senior Phase bridges the gap between consolidation and extension at the Intermediate Phase and choices at the College Phase.

The Senior Phase enjoys learners of this age because it is one of the most exciting periods in the lives of young students. It is a time of transformation, learners make enormous cognitive leaps in their ability to focus and absorb rich and complex information. At the end of Grade 9 students will be ready to take on the challenge of independent work requiring sustained concentration that will await them in the college phase.

In this, Senior Phase, it is important to remember that:

  • Learners become more independent
  • They are become clearer about their own interests
  • They mature cognitively and use lateral reasoning
  • They have an understanding of probability, correlation, combinations,                    prepositional and higher order cognitive skills
  • Learners further develop abstract thought
  • They still concentrate on social responsibility but move towards                            independent morality.
