Intermediate Phase

The Intermediate Phase is the second stage of formal schooling in the South African CAPS curriculum and includes Grade 4, Grade 5, and Grade 6. It serves as a crucial bridge between the Foundation Phase and the Senior Phase, supporting learners as they move from basic skills acquisition to more advanced, subject-specific learning.

In this phase, learners no longer learn to read—they begin to read to learn. The focus shifts to developing thinking skills, problem-solving abilities, and the application of knowledge across a broader range of subjects. Learners begin to take greater responsibility for their own learning, engage with more complex content, and express their ideas with growing confidence.

At Latitude Home Education, we provide learners in the Intermediate Phase with CAPS approved learning materials.

Grades 4-6

In the Intermediate Phase, students:

  • Enjoy the challenges of tackling independent tasks.
  • Begin to reveal the desire to take control of their own learning.
  • Attempt to satisfy their curiosity about the world around them through                 active and critical enquiry in the learning process.
  • Become more deliberate and methodical in their approach.
  • Become increasingly more able to access, record and manipulate                            information.
  • Become more increasingly able to investigate, compare and assess.
