Senior Phase
The Senior Phase is the final stage of the General Education and Training (GET) Band in the South African CAPS curriculum, covering Grade 7 to Grade 9. It is a transitional phase that prepares learners for the demands of the Further Education and Training (FET) Phase, starting in Grade 10.
This phase is one of the most exciting and transformative periods in a young learner’s educational journey. The Senior Phase is more than just an academic stage—it is a time of cognitive expansion, emotional development, and self-discovery. Learners begin to make enormous leaps in focus, comprehension, and independent thought. They move from consolidating knowledge in the Intermediate Phase to exploring more advanced content and applying critical thinking skills.
The Senior Phase curriculum bridges the gap between foundational learning and academic specialisation. It provides learners with more opportunities to acquire, develop, and apply advanced knowledge and skills and encourages learners to explore subject choices that may inform their future academic and career decisions.
In this, Senior Phase, it is important to remember that:
- Learners become more independent
- They are become clearer about their own interests
- They mature cognitively and use lateral reasoning
- They have an understanding of probability, correlation, combinations, prepositional and higher order cognitive skills
- Learners further develop abstract thought
- They still concentrate on social responsibility but move towards independent morality.
