GED to degree

Admission to study a degree course at a South African University requires matriculation exemption (a National Senior Certificate with a Bachelor’s Pass). Learners with foreign / international qualifications have to apply to USAF (Universities South Africa) for exemption.

USAF does not recognise the GED® for university admission.

With the GED as a grade 12 equivalent qualification learners can study further at a number of colleges and obtain a NQF level 5 higher certificate and progress to a NQF level 6 diploma qualification.

According to the Higher Education Act, if a student has a NQF 5 higher Certificate qualification or a NQF 6 diploma qualification, then a learner qualifies for complete exemption and can get university admission.

Universities have prescribed minimum requirements that learners must meet. Different universities have different admission requirements – parents and learners must check / confirm with their university of choice for minimum and/or additional requirements.

A NQF level 5 higher certificate is usually a one year (12 month) course that has a minimum of 120 credits and is focused on a specific career to provide learners with skills required in order to perform in a chosen field of study.

It can also be used as a standalone qualification to apply for a job or learnership.
