The American High School Diploma is based on common core standards which focuses on multiple intelligences and the development of individual talents

Assessment in the American High School Diploma is focused on understanding, application, and learner growth—not high-stakes exams or rote memorisation.

Unlike traditional systems, the American model values how much a learner understands and can do, rather than just what they remember for a test. This makes it ideal for home educating families who want to track progress meaningfully while supporting the development of each learner’s unique strengths.

There are no national standardised exams required to earn the American High School Diploma. Learners are assessed on their level of mastery within a subject—this means evaluating how well they understand and apply what they've learned. Grading can be done by a parent, tutor, or facilitator based on completed coursework, assignments, discussions, and project work. The goal of assessment is to inform learning, not control it.

SAT: University Admission Test

For learners intending to apply to colleges or universities, we recommend preparing for and writing the SAT.

The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) is a standardised test used for university admission. It is not a qualification but an admissions requirement for many institutions.

The SAT measures university/college readiness through:

  • Evidence-based reading and writing
  • Mathematics
  • Optional essay (depending on university requirements)

SAT results are submitted directly to universities, not to curriculum providers.

Universities have varying SAT score requirements, parents and learners are advised to check these requirements with their university of choice.
