University Admission
The American High School Diploma is an internationally respected secondary school qualification. In South Africa, it is recognised by USAF (Universities South Africa) as a Matric Equivalent, allowing eligible learners to apply for university admission.
However, as per South African legislation, learners who do not complete the National Senior Certificate (NSC) must obtain a Matriculation Exemption Certificate to qualify for first-degree studies at a local university. Matriculation Exemption is a legal requirement confirming that a learner meets the minimum criteria to apply to a South African university. It is issued by USAF (Universities South Africa)—the official Matriculation Board.
USAF has provided requirements for three options through which the American High School Diploma can be obtained for admission to a South African University.

The SAT is a standardised college admission test widely accepted by U.S. and South African universities. It assesses skills in Math, Reading, and Writing. There are 9 SAT test centres in South Africa, and registration can be completed through the College Board. Individual universities or faculties may set their own required SAT scores for admission.
Important Note:
Matriculation Exemption does not guarantee university acceptance. Learners must still meet:
- Faculty-specific subject requirements
- APS scores or SAT scoresli
- Additional institutional criteria
Always consult the admissions office of your chosen university or programme for their latest requirements.
