The American High School Diploma is typically studied over a period of 4 years from Grades 9-12.
There is no National Curriculum to follow, learners need to accumulate a minimum of 22 credits from Grades 9-12 and need to complete certain
core subjects and six electives.
With the exception of learners seeking University admission there are no standardised tests/examinations.

Credits and electives
Electives are subjects / courses that learners choose to take in addition to the core subjects.
Learners are free to choose any elective course, it can be a course that interests them, courses orientated towards career readiness or university / college credit courses.
Learners need to complete six elective credits from Grades 9-12, core subjects can also be taken as electives.
The credit system prescribes the minimum number of credits that a learner has to complete in order to graduate. Learners need to accumulate 22 credits to earn their diploma. Credits outline the minimum requirements in the following subject areas: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Health, Physical Education, World Languages and a certain number of elective credits.
One credit is equivalent to 150 hours of study or the completion of study of a standard curriculum textbook, which usually takes two semesters (One academic year of study). These are often referred to as 2 semester courses.
Single semester courses or half year courses equates to 75 hours of study and is equal to half a credit.
