Cambridge International Examinations
At Latitude Home Education, we support independent learners and home educated learners in preparing for internationally recognised qualifications through Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE). Learners are encouraged to register for their examinations at approved Cambridge Examination Centres, through the British Council in South Africa or through Partner Cambridge schools that allow private candidates to write alongside their enrolled students.
Cambridge international exams are written twice a year worldwide:
- May/June
- October/November
Learners must register in advance with their chosen centre—each centre sets its own deadlines and fees. Early planning is essential to secure placement and avoid late registration penalties.
IGCSE Grading.
The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is typically taken by learners aged 14–16. It is an internationally recognised qualification that prepares students for further academic study (such as AS & A Levels) and supports applications to South African and international universities.
- A to G* for extended level
- C to G for core levelr
- A Grade C or better in extended level is required for matriculation exemption in South Africa.
🔹 AS & A Level Assessment Routes
Cambridge International AS & A Levels offer three flexible routes for learners to complete their qualifications:

Grading & Percentage Uniform Mark (PUM).
Understanding AS & A Level Grading and the Percentage Uniform Mark (PUM)
Cambridge AS Level Grading.
- Grades awarded: A to E
- No A* is awarded at AS Level
The reason an A* is not available at AS Level is because it is intended to reflect outstanding performance across the full A Level, which includes both the AS (first half) and A2 (second half) components. AS Level is considered half of the full A Level, and therefore only awards grades A to E, where A is the highest grade achievable.
Cambridge A Level Grading.
- Grades awarded: A* to E
- A* is the highest grade and represents exceptional achievement in the full A Level assessment (AS + A2)l
The A* was introduced to differentiate top-performing learners and to better support university admissions—especially at competitive institutions.
The Percentage Uniform Mark (PUM) is a numerical score that is reported alongside your grade on the official Cambridge Statement of Results. It helps show how well a learner performed within a specific grade band.
- It does not affect your grade—it simply adds detail to your performance
- It allows universities and parents to understand whether a learner is at the top middle, or lower end of a grade
Example:
If a learner earns a Grade B with a PUM of 79, they are very close to an A
If the PUM was 71, it would indicate a mid-range B
If the PUM was 60, the learner is at the lower end of the B grade
